Lowest-cost long-term compliance archive

Challenge brief
Vanth Insurance holds 80 TB of closed claim files that the business has not opened in two years and expects to open perhaps twice more before they age out. Compliance requires the files to stay retrievable for seven years from closure, after which they should disappear on their own. The auditor who does ask gives two weeks of notice, so a retrieval that takes hours rather than milliseconds is fine; finance simply wants the smallest possible storage bill. Which design holds the files for the full seven years at the lowest storage cost?
Success criteria
- 1.Add the S3 bucket the closed claim files are written to.
- 2.Add one S3 Lifecycle rule to run both the transition and the seven-year expiry.
- 3.Transition the files to S3 Glacier Deep Archive, the class for yearly-or-rarer access.
- 4.Connect the bucket through the lifecycle rule to Deep Archive.
- 5.Do not leave the archive sitting in S3 Standard; that is the cost the design removes.
